Eliza Thompson House
Cotton merchant Joseph Thompson built this Greek Revival home in 1847 for his wife Eliza and their seven children, making it the first house on Jones Street, long celebrated as one of the most beautiful streets in America. The family was marked by loss during the Civil War era, and local lore holds that their son James died young after a spooked horse kicked him outside the house. Today the home is an adults-only bed-and-breakfast where guests and paranormal investigators most often report activity in Room 132: a Confederate soldier said to appear only from the waist up, seated on the couch or gazing out the upstairs window. A lady in white drifts through the corridors at night, and the soft laughter of children, including small hands tugging at bedsheets, has kept more than one guest awake until dawn.
