Madison Square
Laid out in 1837 and named for President James Madison, this leafy square in Savannah's fourth row sits along Bull Street, bordered by handsome antebellum landmarks: the Green-Meldrim House, St. John's Episcopal Church, and the 1840 Sorrel-Weed House, the oldest building on the square. At its center stands the William Jasper Monument, raised in 1888 by sculptor Alexander Doyle to honor the sergeant who, though mortally wounded, recovered his company's banner during the bloody Siege of Savannah in 1779, when allied forces failed to retake the city from British defenders.
The ground here is steeped in that defeat. Visitors describe a hush that falls at dusk, cold spots near the monument, and the uneasy sense of company drifting among the live oaks, as though the fallen still keep watch over the brick and shade.
