Madison Square

Named for President James Madison, this square honors the bloody Siege of Savannah and the soldiers who fell trying to retake the city in 1779. A monument marks the dead who lie beneath. Visitors describe a hush that falls at dusk, cold spots near the central monument, and the sense of uneasy company among the trees.
