Church · Eureka Springs, AR

St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church

Dedicated May 11, 1909, St. Elizabeth's was built by railroad magnate Richard Kerens as a memorial to his mother, Elizabeth. Set into the hillside on Crescent Drive, it is famous as a Ripley's Believe It or Not curiosity for its unusual layout, with a ramp leading from the bell tower to the entrance. Its haunted reputation centers on a Lady in White seen in the gardens at twilight, drifting in a flowing gown and clutching a rosary; storytellers speculate she is a bride who died before her wedding or a devoted parishioner. Visitors describe shadow figures near the memorial plaques and a hunched figure kneeling in prayer that vanishes when approached, along with unexplained footsteps on the tower stairs. The site sits a short walk from the Crescent Hotel, anchoring the upper reaches of the town's haunted Victorian district.
