Bishop's Palace (Gresham's Castle)
Designed by architect Nicholas J. Clayton and completed in 1893 for railroad magnate and politician Walter Gresham and his wife Josephine, this Chateauesque mansion is a National Historic Landmark known as "Gresham's Castle." The Greshams raised their children here, and Walter died in the home in 1920. Though no documented tragedy occurred inside, witnesses passing the front porch report being inexplicably pushed, scratched, tripped, or punched by unseen forces. The most repeated account describes the apparition of a man, often identified as Walter Gresham, pacing nervously back and forth across the curved porch and in front of the great wooden doors before vanishing into them, with the activity said to intensify during storms and hurricanes. The hauntings are documented by Ghost City Tours and other Galveston paranormal sources, and the house, now owned by the Galveston Historical Foundation, is open for daily tours.
