The Grand 1894 Opera House
Built in 1894 by theatrical manager Henry Greenwall with $100,000 raised from local backers, the Grand survived the 1900 Storm and reopened, going on to host Harry Houdini, Sarah Bernhardt, and other touring stars. The "Official Opera House of Texas" is also reputed to be haunted. During a 1990 staging of The Phantom of the Opera, cast and crew reported unexplained footsteps and shadowy figures moving backstage, an episode often cited as the start of the theater's modern ghost lore. Since then, performers, staff, and visitors have described shadow figures spotted after dark, cold spots, and disembodied sounds in the historic auditorium and backstage areas. The Grand appears on Visit Galveston's official guide to the island's haunted sites and in Atlas Obscura's entry on the building, and it remains an active live-performance venue in the downtown Cultural Arts District.
