Hotel Galvez (Grand Galvez)
Opened in 1911 and nicknamed the "Queen of the Gulf," the Galvez is best known for the ghost of Room 501, called Audra or the "Lovelorn Bride." Local lore says a young woman in the 1950s rented the room while awaiting her fiance, a mariner sailing into the Port of Galveston. After hearing his ship had been lost in a storm, she hanged herself in the hotel's west turret; the report later proved false and he survived. Guests and staff have for decades reported the phone in 501 ringing with no caller on the switchboard, a woman sobbing near the elevators, and the sensation of an unseen presence sitting on the bed. One widely retold account describes a room key registering "Expired 1955" at the front desk. The legend and sightings are documented by Galveston ghost-tour operators and the hotel itself.
