Calhoun Square
Laid out in 1851 and named for South Carolina statesman John C. Calhoun, this is the only one of Savannah's squares still ringed entirely by its original buildings, among them the 1853 Alexander Bennett House and the steepled 1875 Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church. Many believe it was raised over forgotten ground, having served as a burial place known as Strangers Burial Ground and Potter's Field; in 2004 utility workers unearthed a skull while digging nearby.
The 1855 Massie schoolhouse on its edge was once used to hold the dead. Residents tell of children's voices, phantom footsteps, and objects moving on their own in nearby homes.
The city officially renamed it Taylor Square in 2023, honoring Civil War nurse Susie King Taylor, though locals and ghost tours still call it Calhoun Square.
