Cape May Lighthouse

Standing 157 feet over Cape May Point since 1859, this is one of the country's oldest continuously operating lighthouses, built by the Army Corps of Engineers and now restored and run as a museum by Cape May MAC. Beyond its 199-step iron staircase, the tower carries a long-running reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors and tour guides report heavy, unexplained footsteps echoing up the spiral stairs and ghostly figures ascending the steps, lore most often attributed to a past lightkeeper said never to have left his post. A "Woman in White" carrying a lantern is also said to wander the grounds, eternally searching. The lighthouse is a regular stop on Cape May's haunted walking and trolley tours, where its history of shipwrecks, storms, and isolated keepers anchors the ghost stories told along the path to the tower.
