Colonial Park Cemetery
Established in 1750 and closed to burials in 1853, Colonial Park is Savannah's oldest surviving cemetery, six acres of leaning slate and weathered vaults behind an iron gate near the heart of the historic district. It holds an estimated ten thousand souls, among them more than seven hundred lost to the yellow-fever epidemic that swept the city in 1820.
After Union forces occupied Savannah in December 1864, soldiers sheltered among the graves and inside the vaults, and are said to have defaced and rearranged the headstones for sport, altering dates and ages so that many stones no longer match their dead. Visitors today photograph drifting orbs, report sudden cold spots beneath the live oaks, and sometimes catch a lone figure standing among the stones at dusk.
