Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
Built in 1820 for James Moore Wayne, then mayor of Savannah, this Regency townhouse at 10 East Oglethorpe Avenue is where Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, was born in 1860. She lived here until she married William Mackay Low in 1886 and moved to the United Kingdom, the same year her parents added a third story during renovations.
The house stayed in the family until the Girl Scouts purchased it in 1953 and opened it as a museum in 1956, Savannah's first registered National Historic Landmark. Staff say Juliette never fully left, and neither did her husband, whose presence is felt throughout the rooms.
Visitors report the sudden scent of his cologne, a chandelier that sways without a draft, and the rustle of unseen skirts on the staircase.
