Historic Savannah Theatre
Designed by British architect William Jay and opened in December 1818 at 222 Bull Street on Chippewa Square, the Historic Savannah Theatre is one of the oldest continually operating theaters in America. It has weathered ruin again and again, surviving the 1898 hurricane that flooded its auditorium, a 1906 fire that left a new brick facade, and a 1948 fire that rebuilt it into the Art Deco house standing today.
Through every reincarnation, performers and crew speak of a ghost light that will not stay off and a spectral actor, sometimes called the man in gray, who lingers in the wings. A little girl's spirit is said to dance across the stage when the house sits empty, the kind of after-hours quiet that, in a place this old, never feels entirely still.
