The Tremont House
Housed in the 1879 Leon H. Blum Building in historic downtown, the Tremont House carries the name of an earlier hotel that hosted figures like Sam Houston and Ulysses S. Grant. Its most reported ghost is the "Civil War Soldier," an apparition guests and staff have described for years marching across the lobby past the elevator, his boots audibly clattering when he isn't seen. Because the original Tremont changed hands during the Civil War, the soldier's allegiance remains unknown. Another spirit is "Sam," a gambler said to have returned from a winning night only to be murdered in his sleep and robbed; guests report knocking and a one-footed shuffle attributed to his limp. A third frequently told story involves a young boy named Jimmy, said to have been killed by a car outside, whose playful activity is reported in the bar. The hauntings are documented by multiple Galveston ghost-tour operators.
