Square · Savannah, GA

Wright Square

Wright Square rests on far older ground than its monuments suggest. It was the burial place of Tomochichi, the Yamacraw chief who welcomed Savannah's founders, and the site where Alice Riley was hanged in 1735, the first woman executed in Georgia. Visitors say Alice still wanders the square at dusk, searching for the infant taken from her, and that Spanish moss refuses to grow on the trees where she died.
