The Alamo

Founded in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo became the site of the 1836 siege where the Texan defenders died fighting Santa Anna's army. The earliest ghost reports came within days of the battle: when Santa Anna ordered the church burned, the soldiers sent to carry out the command reportedly fled, claiming robed figures wielding flaming swords blocked them. Between 1894 and 1897, the San Antonio Express chronicled persistent disturbances after the building served other uses, including phantom footsteps in the corridor outside the cells, disembodied moans and whispered voices, and the sound of a sentry marching the roof. Visitors and rangers still report grotesque man-shaped forms emanating from the limestone walls, the screams of battle, and whispers filtering through the stone. It is frequently called the most haunted site in Texas.
