The Gunter Hotel
The Gunter, opened in 1909, is tied to one of San Antonio's most chilling unsolved crimes. On February 8, 1965, a housekeeper entered Room 636 to find a man standing beside a blood-soaked bed; he hushed her, gathered a bundle, and fled. The man had checked in days earlier under the alias 'Albert Knox' and had been seen coming and going with a tall woman. Investigators identified him as Walter Emerick, who shot himself at the nearby St. Anthony Hotel before he could be questioned. No body was ever recovered and the woman's identity remains unknown. Since then, staff and guests have reported a restless female spirit appearing with her arms outstretched near Room 636 and phantom hammering from the empty room. The hotel also famously hosted bluesman Robert Johnson's first recording sessions in 1936.
