The Plaza Arts Center
Built around 1916 as the Eatonton School, the building at 305 North Madison Avenue once housed every grade in Putnam County before its 2008 rebirth as a 500-seat theater and cultural center, complete with a lovingly restored early-20th-century classroom. Presiding over those old halls was Principal Dickey, a man so devoted to discipline that, by local account, even death failed to release him from his rounds. Visitors to his former classroom report his framed portrait turning up in the middle of the floor with no one near it, and stray voices murmuring in rooms where everyone insists they kept silent. Those who slouch or stop paying attention sometimes feel a sudden chill and the cold press of a hand on the shoulder, a stern reminder to sit up straight from a principal who never truly left.
