Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park

Built of red brick in 1882 in a Victorian style, the Cochise County Courthouse served justice for decades before becoming a state historic park and museum. Seven men were legally hanged on the gallows in the courtyard between 1884 and 1900, executions that once drew crowds; a reconstructed gallows stands there today. The best-known specter is a Lady in White, reportedly seen in a white dress on the courthouse balcony, quietly watching the street below. Local lore identifies her as the widow of an outlaw hanged by that very court. Around the courtyard and gallows, visitors describe shadow figures, sudden cold, a feeling of dread, and sensations of a rope tightening around the neck. The site is a regular stop on Tombstone ghost tours, and the museum preserves execution-era artifacts, including an invitation to a hanging, that deepen its grim reputation.
