Wormsloe Historic Site
Wormsloe began as the fortified estate of Noble Jones, a carpenter and colonist who leased land on the Isle of Hope in 1736, about eleven miles southeast of downtown Savannah. Between 1739 and 1745 he raised a house of tabby, a coarse concrete of oyster shells and lime, its walls anchored by bastions at each corner against the Spanish to the south.
Those tabby ruins still stand, the oldest structure in Savannah. The mile-and-a-half avenue of more than four hundred live oaks, planted in the 1890s, is among the most photographed approaches in Georgia.
Visitors report figures moving among the trees at dusk and the feeling of being watched from the old fort by those who never left their post.
