Jerome (Hogback) Cemetery
Established in the late 1800s soon after Jerome's founding, this windswept burial ground sits on Hogback Ridge at the edge of town, reached via North Avenue off Highway 89A. It is believed to hold roughly 400 graves, yet fewer than 40 headstones survive amid broken markers and overgrown plots. Among those documented here are miners killed in underground accidents, victims of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, and casualties of the violence that earned Jerome its "wickedest town in the West" reputation. Ghost-tour operators and visitors consistently report a peculiar set of experiences near the cemetery, especially its north end: shadowy figures moving between the weathered tombstones, disembodied voices carried on the wind, ethereal footsteps, and sudden, inexplicable drops in temperature on otherwise warm afternoons. Its obscurity, off the main tourist routes and hard to find among winding dirt roads, has helped preserve its reputation as one of the area's quieter but eeriest haunted sites.
