The Bryan Museum

The Bryan Museum occupies the building of the former Galveston Orphans' Home, constructed in 1895, damaged in the 1900 Storm, and rebuilt to reopen in 1902. The home sheltered orphaned and needy children for nearly a century, and that long history of childhood loss feeds its ghost lore. Denise Sandoval, who served as caretaker for 17 years when the building was privately owned, reported several encounters with spirits there, and some locals claim the spirits of lost children appear at the site. It is cited on Galveston haunted-place roundups, including US Ghost Adventures' top ten. The Orphans' Home is frequently confused with St. Mary's Catholic Orphanage on the beach, where ten nuns and 93 children drowned in the 1900 Storm, but it is a separate institution. Today the building houses the Bryan Collection of Texas and Western artifacts, and the museum openly shares the orphanage timeline that underlies the reported hauntings.
